I agree that the NHL rules are the way to go.

The problem is as in all sports, most of the officals never played the game. It is the same in Football and Cricket. In Football none of the top refs ever played at the top level, so you get inconsistency in the implementing of the rules.

In the case of hockey and last Sundays game, the ref and his linesmen were there to implement the rules and help the players. Because they have never or could not make the grade and get on the ice as a player, they are unable to see the frustration that the players feel, they just blow the whistle and point. They never speak to the players, the players have to speak to them. They are then seen as whingers. The game then boils over.

Never mind the next game will see another Ref 2 more linesmen who think they are doing a great job, but are hurting the game with inconsistency.

The best think that could happen is that on Sunday night the ref talks to the players explains why he has blown the whistle and gets back to the important business of running the game with a firm but fair hand.

The problem currently is that refs have been told that they can no longer effectively manage a game, ie warn players and then call it if infractions persist. The call it exactly against the rule book, no discussion. Thus the frustration.

In an ideal world all officials would have played at the highest levels, in reality I can't ever see this being true

I think if you ask the players they don't mind the way the rules are enforced. What any player craves is consistency.

As Luke wrote at the end of the match report in the end something will give. The powers that run the game in the UK need to take a long hard look at what they are doing. Yes its good that at long last the fowards are getting some protection. Some may say about time to. last sunday night twice Jordy Black was tripped up while bearing down on goal. With just the netminder to beat he was pulled down. What happens next?, a 2 min pen, a penality shot........no nothing at all. Minutes later 2 players have a minor falling out and they are in the shower.

Is it just me or have they got it wrong.
