Cody Payne from London UK has been drafted by the Bruins in todays NHL Entry Draft. 18yr old Cody is a tough winger and was taken by the Bruins in the fifth round.

Interesting. The NHL draft pages certainly have him as born in London but Elite Prospects has him as born in Maple, Ontario and hockeydb has Weston, Florida.

I suppose the NHL site is more likely to be accurate. He's probably like former Bruin Byron Dafoe: born in the UK but emigrated to Canada (or the US) at an early age and well before he started playing hockey.

Cody was born in London (UK) but grew up in Canada. He`s a feisty 6`2" winger with a growing reputation as a tough fighter.

Dafoe is from Sussex. Shawn Thornton has roots in Belfast.

It`ll be interesting to monitor Cody Payne`s progress, maybe he`ll be the next "Shawn Thornton" !

Just out of interest, Don, do you know if there is even the slightest hint of "British trained"?

Or did he start playing only after moving to North America?

If not British trained then hopefully he might qualify through birth for our National team assuming he's never represented Canada.. Could help GB out next year!

Cody Payne is in Boston at Development Camp following the Draft.
His hockey history does not appear to be rooted in the UK.
He WAS born in London, UK so he is a Brit, however, he moved to Florida at a young age (don't know exactly when) but his first hockey was on roller skates in Florida.

He then moved into the junior (ice) hockey ranks in Canada.

Oh well !

He could still play for the Mos as an "import", though, if he doesn't do well at camp!

This is a bit off topic, but I just spotted that Nathan Walker is rumoured on Elite Prospects to be signing for Washington Capitals.

He was born in Cardiff, has Australian/British nationality but seems to have played most of his hockey in the Czech Republic.

He was the lad who stood out in the Spengler Cup at the beginning of the year. He has been playing in the Czech Republic since the age of 12 I believe? Was rated quite highly amongst European Skaters for the NHL Draft but went unpicked?

That's interesting, Rob.

I missed most of the Spengler Cup last winter so I hadn't come across him.

If the Caps don't want him, he has British nationality so could play for the Mos as an import!

That sounds so funny! We can have foriegners who arent imports but he has British Nationality and has to be an import. Something is just wrong with that rule.
